Environmental Monitoring Report 2025: these are the results for our Loenen plant

How sustainable is production at our Loenen plant? And what actions are we taking to boost the sustainability of solid board production? The Environmental Monitoring Report 2025 highlights our biggest achievements. From lower energy consumption per tonne of product to using raw materials and water more efficiently. Every improvement brings us closer to more sustainable production.

More production, less energy per tonne

In 2025, we produced more solid board than in 2024. What’s more, we consumed less energy per tonne of product. This is the outcome of numerous improvements in our production process, which boost the efficiency of our plant.

These improvements build on strategies we introduced in recent years to further reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Such as LED lighting, improving the insulation of our buildings and plant, and optimising our processes. In 2026, the next step is installing solar panels on our roofs, followed by obtaining certification for CO₂ reduction management in line with ISO 14001. We aim to achieve certification now, in readiness for future legislation while continuing to make our production processes even more sustainable.

Smart use of raw materials

In the production of solid board, we use as much recycled paper sourced from the region as possible. This minimises travel distances and emissions, and gives paper a second life. We also keep a close eye on our waste streams. Most of our commercial waste comprises material released during the processing of recycled paper. Wherever we can, we put these waste streams to good use, for energy generation or reuse elsewhere.

Every drop of water counts

We’re making improvements in other areas, too. Water is essential for the production of new packaging. At our Loenen plant, we use water from the canal or groundwater. Our plant has reduced its water consumption by tens of per cent by reusing water more efficiently within the production process. Read our article explaining how we did this.

The results featured in the Environmental Monitoring Report 2025 show that together, big and small improvements make all the difference. At Smart Packaging Solutions, our goal of making production more sustainable isn’t a one-off project but a continuous process. We’ll continue to invest in smart improvements to reduce our environmental impact in the years ahead.
