Boosting sustainability at our Loenen site
1,137 solar panels to reduce CO₂ emissions by 190 tonnes a year
We’ve installed solar panels on the roofs of the KBA hall (which houses the offset press) and the sheet warehouse. This marks another important step towards making our Loenen plant more sustainable. The total investment amounts to € 260,000: € 60,000 for the roof of the KBA hall (252 panels) and € 200,000 for the sheet warehouse (885 panels).
Each of the 1,137 solar panels has a capacity of 540 Wp, bringing the total installed capacity to approximately 614 kWp. Due to the site’s existing electrical infrastructure, the installation on the sheet warehouse is limited to a maximum of 320 amps. Together, the solar panels are expected to produce around 550,000 kWh of renewable electricity a year, resulting in an annual estimated CO₂ reduction of around 190 tonnes. This equates to the annual emissions of dozens of households, and will make a substantial contribution to reducing our environmental impact.
Maximising production process efficiency
The project also delivers significant sustainability benefits on multiple fronts. All the energy generated will be used directly on site to power the solid board machine and other production processes. No surplus electricity will be fed back into the public grid. This direct use maximises the installation’s efficiency from an environmental and financial perspective. Every kilowatt-hour generated is one less kilowatt-hour we would otherwise source from the grid. We are also exploring opportunities to install additional solar panels on other sections of the roof. This would further increase our capacity to generate renewable energy on site, and support our sustainability ambitions.
As part of our quality and safety assurance process, a Scope 12 inspection will shortly be carried out to verify that the solar panel installations comply with all relevant safety and quality requirements.
